McSpicy Meal

Condemn McD all you want but here are some hard facts we should analyze before saying whats acceptable and whats not.

Health Promotion Board says…

For a 19-29 yr old

Recommended Intake:

energy (kcal): 2550
protein: 68g
fats: 71g
saturated fat: 24g
cholesterol: 300mg
carbohydrate: 351g
dietary fibre: 26g
sodium: 1700mg

So with these facts, taken against a standard McSpicy meal which most Singaporeans in the age group would consume in a meal. Their meal would consume the following percentage of daily recommended.

Energy: 43%, Protein: n/a, Fats: 63%, Saturated Fat: 66%, Cholesterol: 25%, Dietary Fibre: 26%, Sodium: 95%,

As you can see from the above percentages, Sodium is definitely on the high side. The remaining percentages, I believe you decide on your own.

p.s. None of the facts above were sensationalized skewed. They are all taken from the above websites that respective companies publish.

Mystery Shopping

This has been on my mind for the last few months since I was working in McD where mystery shoppers determined how well each restaurants performs.

However I do see some flaws with this.

1. As every mystery shopper has different perception of what is “warm” and what is “friendly”. Different shoppers have different expectations. How can mystery shoppers have a more equalized standard?

2. Can a 1 minute conversation determine how well the entire store is doing? And if 1 person is friendly, is that the representation that everyone else is friendly?

3. Mystery shoppers are scheduled to come at specific times of the day. Are other times of the day “okay” for shops to not provide excellent service?

4. Are Mystery Shoppers screened well?

I believe there is definitely a better way to conduct this. Customer service by any sense should be a holistic approach. It doesn’t just stop at saying “hi” or “thank you”. Furthermore, if mystery shoppers are meant to simulate a normal customer and how well they feel they are received, shouldn’t there be more than 1 review to better provide a general perspective?

I will leave as it is for now… till I think of a better method of doing so.

Hit me up if you think you have a better concept.

Weekends

Spent the my first unemployed weekend doing something more productive then watching the same old Tele shows (TLC) or seeing a 200+ mindless people cycle around Spain (Vuelta). Since my girlfriend was out of town, decided to take a slow bus ride into town and do some book shopping. I can’t quite remember when was the last time I actually bought a book and read it. Its been ages and I think the last time I did that was probably somewhere in yr 2 of Uni? Gosh thats long… High time I did something to enrich myself.

I was initially looking for a particular book on Technical Selling, but somehow everywhere seemed to not carry it.

Undeterred, I took my time to slowly browse through titles and one of Malcolm Gladwell’s caught my attention. Outliers was the title and though it wasn’t the latest book (some dog book is), I have heard rave reviews about it. Read through the first chapter and thought it was something worth reading. I also saw a book called “Made to Stick” by Dan and Chip Heath. I’ve read their column on FastCompany’s website and its their point of view has always been interesting. Bought the 2 books and headed off to Kinokuniya.

Kino sadly did not carry the book I was looking for but I to my surprise, I saw “Rework” by DHH and Jason Fried of 37 Signals. I’ve been following this company since 01 and have always thought that “Underdoing” the industry was something not many will stand up to.

Things I learn from the book which I sat down 2 hrs straight and read through it…

Planning is guessing. Don’t set too long term goals. Working without a plan may seem scary, but blindly Following a plan that has no relationship with reality is even scarier.

Emulate Drug Dealers.

Less is a good thing. Embrace constraints

Meetings are toxic
1. Set a timer. Once up, finish
2. Invite as few ppl
3. Always have a clear agenda
4. Begin with a specific problem.
5. Meet at the site of the problem
6. End with a solution and meet out responsibilities.

Don’t be a hero. Quit if it’s not worth it.

There’s a lot that could be learnt from this book. I mean, say what you want about 37 signals, how “oblivion” they might be about the rest of the industry but these people live what they say. And they’ve got success to prove so why not listen?

Back Cover

So that was my Saturday. Ended the evening by starting Outliers.

Outliers

And how did my Sunday go?

Well, it was Church followed by brownies, jasmine green tea, Outliers and pondering on how effective Mystery Shoppers really are…

And the pondering led me to do some reflection as well…

Personal Reflections

National Championships

Came in first lap in 4th only to have a puncture that would subsequently push me back to 7th. Nevertheless, was a good ride.

National Championships

National Championship first lap

Running the last bit.

Running

Nationals MTB

Details are out on Cyclone’s website.

2 Laps for Senior Sport, which I believe will be one heck of a crazy mad push right from the get go. First and foremost, they’ve changed the track and it will be flat out for the main part of the section till the climbs at the gas pipes. So jostling for positions will be critical.

I’ve got stiff competition from Sam and Ellery who are traditionally better right from the gun. Well, we’ll see how it goes this time round.

Roadies will be racing this weekend. Hope they do well and bag some medals back!

Championship Course

McDonalds

Yes, I know it may be a big surprise for many, but I’ve decided to embark on my career in McDonalds. So why Mac? Well, I’ve got a huge interest in F&B plus McD has offered me a pretty exciting career, one that I don’t seem to get in a more traditional Engineering career.

So how has life been? Well I started full time on June the 1st and I’ve already learnt making pretty much all the sandwiches and items we sell on the menu. I also attended BSMC 5510 course which was conducted at Hamburger University last week. I must say the trainers were really inspiring and opened up our minds to the world of running a restaurant. Yes, there’s so much that must be in place and not just that, customer service and customer satisfaction must always be top notch! I managed to bag 2 awards during the course, Best Contributor and Dean’s List. Looking forward to moving up the ladder in McD and running my own restaurant/restaurants. =)

I haven’t really been able to constantly update my blog as I just started working. Its been tough and shift work. Will share more over the next few days when I find the time, and also on my recent trip to Australia and my ill-fated 12 hr marathon ride.

Lenser P7

Lenser P7

Everybody been on the prowl for lights lately. Good thing I had a very nice friend Justin who decided to help me out on this. He’s got a Lenser P7 which from the specs, looks really good.

Its built really tough and its got all the bells and whistles that you look for in a “professional” light. Its powered by 1 CREE LED lamp and runs with AAA batteries up to 120hrs. Thats a seriously long time! Plus, its built on a modular system which features some really advanced tech (Advanced Focusing + Dynamic Switch).

Its got 200 lumens and looking forward to testing this baby out tomorrow on Tampines. Lets see how it fairs up with the Tomato Canner.
